Plan Ahead as IRS Furloughs Staff
Sequestration cutbacks are about to hit the Internal Revenue Service.Along with other government agencies, the IRS is feeling the pinch and will be unavailable to assist you for several days this summer as workers must take mandatory furlough days. Even staffers working in essential services will be furloughed, though likely on different days to maintain uninterrupted systems and security. At present, the days for most staff to be out are:
- May 24
- June 14
- July 5
- July 22
- August 30
There may be an additional two days in August and/or September, but this decision is not certain yet. What can you do?
- Plan ahead! Try not to solve a tax-related crisis you need government assistance with on the days the offices will be closed.
- If you get a notice with a deadline from the IRS, don’t procrastinate; address it early so that you’re not in the position of needing assistance when none is available.
On a positive note, you’ll recognize that all these days provide long weekends for your IRS service personnel…so they’ll be nice and rested when they get back to work on your taxes!Remember also that your local CPA is probably still working hard during those days (although perhaps not on July 5).
