Non-Profits: Did you file your 990 return yet?
The filing deadline for tax-exempt organizations is four months and 15 days after the group’s year end. So if you handle non-profit accounting or serve on a non-profit board with a calendar year end (December 31), the deadline is May 15 (this Friday!).Remember: for most organizations, tax-exemption is not filing exemption! (Churches are the exception.) Non-profits that fail to file a timely return for three consecutive years lose their exempt status. If the exempt organization can’t meet the deadline, it can request a three-month extension by filing Form 8868. An additional three-month extension may be available if the non-profit justifies why the extended deadline wasn’t met. When filing Form 990, the IRS reminds exempt organizations to exclude social security numbers or other personally identifiable information. Since much of Form 990 is publicly accessible, releasing such information could lead to identity theft. Filing Form 990 electronically minimizes the risk of inadvertently including personal information.Questions on how to file for a non-profit correctly? Need an audit for your non-profit organization?
