The IRS can help! (Wow, really?).Its “Understanding Taxes” website assists individuals in understanding how to prepare an individual tax return and educates visitors on tax policy. Participants can even try balancing the national budget…but think carefully about increasing our taxes!The program is divided into two sections: one for teachers and one for students, middle school and up.Teachers can order tax forms for their students, as well as find lesson plans, fact sheets, PowerPoint presentations and other resources to help teach the tax filing process. Customize these modules to suit your classroom level.Students can test their knowledge through tax trivia, learn how tax dollars are spent, and take virtual field trips. For students old enough to prepare their own returns, a series of tutorials exist to guide them through tax preparation basics.The site map is very user friendly, and the IRS assures us its 38 lessons are “easy, relevant, and fun!”Lessons are available 24/7 and self-paced. No pressure (unlike when actually filing a return!): the program allows breaks at any time.
