Choosing your tax preparer
With so many less-than-honest people out to make a quick buck, one person you want to trust is your tax preparer. After all, you’re about to share a great deal of your confidential information with this person. Here are some tips for choosing a reliable preparer:Ask around: whom do your colleagues use? Were they satisfied with the service they received? Look for:
- A reputable professional who will sign your return and enter a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). This person will also provide you with a digital or paper copy for your records.
- A person or firm who is likely to be around if the IRS questions something on your return. Will your prospective preparer be able to respond to IRS notices or defend you in the event of an examination?
Avoid:
- Preparers who claim to get you the largest refunds.
- Preparers who base their fee on a percentage of your refund.
- Signing blank forms; remember you’re responsible for what’s on your return even if you hire someone else to prepare it.
